Visual Storyteller Scholarship

If yes, then the Visual Storyteller Scholarship is for you!
The Visual Storyteller Scholarship is available for one participant interested in traveling to Indonesia for 6 weeks.

Here’s what you need to know to apply:

Who: Applicants from the United States between the ages of 18 and 30 who are interested in cultural immersion, volunteering, and multi-media marketing.

What: Spend 6 weeks volunteering in Indonesia and documenting the experience through videos, photographs, and recorded testimonials.

Where:

  • 2 weeks in Malang, East Java, working on social issues in the area with a student-driven community organization;
  • 2 weeks in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, teaching English with a local nonprofit; and
  • 2 weeks in Bali, learning sign language and deaf culture in a deaf village striving for equal opportunity.

When: June 24th – August 5th

 

How to Apply:

  1. Submit Your Scholarship Application using the “Submit Your Scholarship Application” button at the top of the page. The Scholarship application should include the content in the following list. All photos and videos, including content, capture, and editing, must be your of own creation. No plagiarism.
    • A short video (3-8 mins) that induces the fear of missing out. The subject can be anything. It does not need to be a travel or international video. Whatever it is, all we ask is that you make us excited to join. Make us want to be a part of it or have a similar experience.
    • Three photographs and captions. The content of the photos should include a landscape, an action shot, and people.
    • A short statement (min 200 – max 500 words) about yourself and why you want this scholarship. Bonus points if you explain what interests you about Indonesia and capturing content abroad.
    • Your Instagram handle and/or other places online where we can see your work
  2. Submit your AFSNext Registration using the “Start Your Registration” button at the top of the page.

 

Timeline:

  1. Submit your scholarship materials and your AFSNext Registration no later than April 1st, 2019. (No fooling.)
  2. The Scholarship winner will be announced no later than April 5th, 2019.
  3. The Scholarship winner will submit a short series of registration forms by April 15th, 2019.
  4. Set off for Indonesia in late June!

 

What’s expected from you:

Within a month after the program ends, AFSNext will need you to deliver at minimum the following materials:

  • 100 photos documenting the program
  • Three promotional videos, one for each of the three project locations.
  • Three vlogs (video blogs), with interviews and so on, one for each of the three project locations.

All content will be shared with AFSNext to use in their marketing efforts.

 

What’s included in the scholarship:

  • Host family accommodation in each of the three locations

What’s not included in the scholarship:

  • International Airfare
  • Necessary passport and visa fees
  • Scholarship winner must bring their own equipment (camera, video camera, tripod, etc.)
